Atheism Is Too Simple

“Atheism turns out to be too simple. If the whole universe has no meaning, we should never have found out that it has no meaning: just as, if there were no light in the universe and therefore no creatures with eyes, we should never know it was dark. Dark would be without meaning.” — C. S. Lewis, Mere Christianity

“We demand proof of God, forgetting that if we could prove God we would be within the compass of our rationalities, and then our logical mind would be our own grotesque God.” — George A. Buttrick

  1. There are galaxies coliding, and atoms splitting apart to create nuclear powered energy. Invisible subatomic particles are being discovered in the science labs and atom colliders. Viruses fester in the swamps and jungles and eat away the skin of any animal who touches it. Babies are born with three sets of chromosomes and without brains in their heads. Secular science studies, analyzes, and sometimes grasps some of these phenomena. Atheists look at this complexity and marvel at the wonder of the universe around us. But to the religious believer, they say, “God works in mysterious ways.” And you think atheism is too simple?
